Although Machu Picchu might be what draws most travelers to Peru, this eclectic country has so much more to offer than incredible, world-class and breathtaking hikes (although the hikes are pretty damn good). On a tour from Lima to Cusco, you’ll discover a distinguished culinary scene full of fresh seafood, Pisco Sours and empanadas. You can even submerge yourself in the Amazon jungle in search of monkeys, river dolphins and anacondas. Now, that's what we call an unforgettable adventure.
Lima to Cusco trips
Lima to Cusco highlights
Visit the vibrant market stalls in Lima
One of the best things to do in Lima is to wander and weave through the bustling, multi-story aisles of its central market with fresh produce, savory snacks, clothes, kitchenware, toys, and traditional trinkets (that make for perfect souvenirs) on offer. The best part? This market promises a fascinating insight into the everyday lives of Peruvians without breaking your travel budget.
Trek through the Amazon Jungle
While there are many natural wonders in Peru, few beat the sheer size and beauty of the Amazon Jungle. Spend your time listening to your local guide as they point out the medicinal and practical uses of the jungle’s flora on a walk through the wilderness and keep your eyes peeled for a flash of color from a nearby butterfly or flying macaw. Off the grid? Try on another planet.
Take in the beauty of Machu Picchu
Whether you’ve hiked the challenging but oh-so-worth-it Inca Trail or taken the train straight to the top, seeing Machu Picchu for the first time as you walk through the Sun Gate is an experience you’ll never forget (and one you’ll want to take at least 387 photos of). Built around 1440AD, this ancient Incan site will leave you speechless as you take a guided tour around its ruins of temples and living quarters.
Walk the charming streets of Cusco
It may be a gateway to the mystical Machu Pichu, but Cusco is a must-visit city in its own right with its captivating culture, delicious food, historical buildings, and friendly locals. Whether you want to explore Plaza de Armas – a public square filled with churches, museums, and cafes – or search for souvenirs at the Mercado San Pedro market, the small but mighty city of Cusco is guaranteed to steal your heart.
Explore Ollantaytambo with a local guide
The charming region of Ollantaytambo (‘Ollanta’ to locals) is as fun to say as it is to explore with an extraordinary combination of natural wonders to look at (thanks to its position in the Sacred Valley), authentic restaurants full of Peruvian delicacies (ceviche anyone?) to eat in, and unforgettable Incan ruins to wander around. Do just that and more with your own local guide for an afternoon.
Indulge in traditional Peruvian delicacies
If you hadn’t treated your tastebuds to Peruvian food before you set foot in this vibrant South American country, then buckle them up because they’re about to go on the culinary ride of their lives. From saucy lomo saltado (stir-fried beef with onions, tomatoes, and chillies) to creative causa (a savory dish made with potato and chicken in a cake-like structure), you’ll never go hungry in Peru.

If Peru is on your bucket list, consider this well-paced adventure featuring all the essential highlights + the Amazon rainforest. The premium level accommodations add to the appeal - but it’s the inclusions and hassle free logistics in a small group that really impressed !

This trip was incredible! Overall was very well organized from booking to end of trip. Customer service representatives were excellent, fast with responses, helpful, and well informed. Our Tour Leaders in each city (Lima and Cusco) were the absolute best and most notable! Specifically, Ali (Lima) was a great communicator, kind, helpful, and well organized. Jose Luis Castro (Cusco) was one of the best guides I've ever had with any travel experience. He was not only remarkably knowledgeable in all things related to our tour, local and I can culture, local foods, local wildlife/environment, but he was a great communicator, well-organized, and on top of organizing every event. He offered great options, choices for local recommendations. You could tell he took pride in his work and felt responsible for our group, taking comprehensive care of all members of our group. He made the tour so much fun, enjoyable, and reduced any concerns, and we are so grateful to have had him for our guide! He went above and beyond to oversee care for a small ankle injury of mine while on the trail, and took care of many others through altitude challenges and overheating. He was not only attentive, caring, knowledgeable, well invested in the health, well-being, and enjoyment of our group, but also came to become a friend. Any opportunity to book with Intrepid we would request Jose. Ronald was also notably incredible in knowledge, skill, kindness, and well organized in his planning and care of our group. The porters, Chef Wilber, and rest of our team was incredible! The food was delicious and we as a group truly respect and honor the hard work all members of our team put into planning, coordinating, executing, and getting us through our trek safely and happily.

If you book this trip, try to get Beto. He has done the trail over 300 times! His experience was essential to our success. He was very patient when things got alittle trying . I’m 66 and my wife is 65, you can do it!!! But hedge your bets with Beto!!!

Luis was an incredible guide, and I hope to see him in this lifetime again or the next (quecha saying). This itinerary is packed - so be prepared to do a lot in a short bit of time. That said, we left more knowledgeable, well fed, and with great friendships. Many highlights - I'll let you discover them for yourself!
